IAIS Identifies the Need to Further Develop Insurance-Specific Macro-Prudential Surveillance

The International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) has released the mid-year edition of the Global Reinsurance Market Report (report). The report examines macro-prudential surveillance in insurance and reinsurance. Findings of the report show that most supervisors carry out macro-prudential surveillance, but the breadth, reach and frequency of that surveillance varies across jurisdictions. Most supervisors tend to analyse insurance markets and the impact of macro-economic variables on that market. However, the focus of surveillance tends to be domestic, rather than international data.

These findings re-emphasise the importance of insurance-specific macro-prudential surveillance of a global nature. The report also identifies that a knowledge gap remains in relation to such surveillance.
