Basel Committee on Banking Supervision Consults on Bank Supervision Core Principles

The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (“BCBS”) has revised its 2006 Core Principles for Effective Banking Supervision, and has merged the document with its Core Principles Methodology. The revision increases the number of principles, and incorporates an emphasis on supervising systemically important banks (“SIB”), though does not introduce SIB-specific principles. The principles also urge supervisors to take macro-perspectives, and strengthens the Core Principles on home-host relationships by requiring cooperation and coordination on crisis management and resolution for cross-border banks. The Principles are formulated by the BCBS, in conjunction with the IMF and the World Bank.
